How Discount Calculations Work

To find the discounted price: multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the discount amount, then subtract from the original price. A $80 item at 25% off: $80 × 0.25 = $20 discount, so the final price is $60.

Stacked Discounts Are Not Additive

Two sequential discounts of 20% and 10% do not equal 30% off. After 20% off: $100 → $80. After 10% off $80: $80 → $72. Total discount is 28%, not 30%. This matters for clearance sales, coupon stacking, and wholesale pricing.

Reverse Discount Calculation

If you know the sale price and want the original price, divide the sale price by (1 - discount rate). If a $60 item is at 25% off, the original price was $60 ÷ 0.75 = $80. Retailers often use this when marking prices back up after a sale period.
